II. SUPERVISION
NAME OF DIRECT SUPERVISOR: PIET VAN ASTEN
TITLE OF SUPERVISOR: SYSTEMS AGRONOMIST – CIALCA PROJECT MANAGER

CONTENT AND METHODOLOGY OF SUPERVISION:
The supervisor will provide scientific supervision and assist the incumbent in preparation of a three-year work with details of activities to be executed and milestones for performance monitoring. This will form the basis for regular monitoring of progress and adjustment of work plans, if necessary. The incumbent will participate in scientific meetings of IITA and its affiliated projects/programs. The candidate will undergo the formal IITA-institute wide annual performance appraisals. The incumbent will be able to liaise with researchers at advanced research institutes outside Africa for training and backstopping in research methodologies.

III. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Review and strengthen IITA’s conceptual framework of research for development opportunities and constraints in banana and tree crop systems based on literature review and interactions with stakeholders.
Develop a work plan that is complementary to, but in line with, IITA’s existing research strategy and projects, based on the research questions derived from the conceptual framework and building on the APO’s specific expertise and interests. The work plan will contain details on data collection, analysis, and publication, combining exploration of existing data with complementary field data collection efforts.

Actively engage in communication with a wide range of banana and coffee stakeholders in the target areas to achieve research objectives, to ensure their research participation during the data collection phase, and to get their feedback on results obtained and the way forward.
Apply quantitative methods to analyse trade-offs in banana and tree crop systems in African smallholder farmers, taking into account resource requirements, profitability, sustainability of the natural resource base, food security, and long-term changes in environmental conditions such as climate change and soil fertility depletion.

Lead and assist in the writing of manuscripts for publication and assist in translating research findings into recommendations for stakeholders.
IV. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

QUALIFICATIONS:
M.Sc. or Ph.D. in agricultural systems with a strong agronomy background and basic knowledge of applied economics and participatory research methods.

EXPERIENCE:
Preferably 2 years relevant working experience. Familiarity with rural institutions and rural livelihoods in both Francophone and Anglophone Africa is desirable.

COMPETENCIES:
Fluency (oral and written) in both English and French.
Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in a cross-cultural environment and to interact effectively with farmers and staff from national institutions and the private sector.

Willingness to travel regionally in challenging conditions.
V. TRAINING COMPONENTS AND LEARNING ELEMENTS

TRAINING COMPONENTS:
Regular mentoring by the supervisor and other senior scientists during research proposal development, design of study, data collection, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.

Regional and country-level meetings in relevant IITA-led projects (CIALCA, LEAD)
Participation in the annual planning and review meetings of IITA
Participation in scientific conferences related to institutional development
Linking with collaborating scientists and professors at advance research institutes in Europe (e.g. Wageningen University), possibly supported by short-term training events at these institutes.

LEARNING ELEMENTS:
In the first year:
conduct literature review;
improved knowledge of the agronomy of perennial-based cropping systems (with emphasis on coffee, cocoa, and bananas),
improved knowledge of the socio-economic context of smallholder farming systems and participatory research methods
develop detailed research proposal and work plan that is in line with IITA’s existing strategy and projects on tree crop x banana systems

IN THE SECOND AND THIRD YEAR:
improved understanding of on-farm and participatory research methods,
improved knowledge of quantitative research methods for trade-off analysis,
understanding of value and knowledge chains in agricultural systems,
learn how to process, evaluate, publish, and present research results;
improved capacity to help translate research results into recommendations for stakeholders at different levels.

GM&T’s Finance function provides an efficient, high quality service to the Business Units, Executive Management and our Parent Company. We aim to provide concise, accurate and timely information to internal and external stakeholders to support key business decisions.

Support is given to those studying for accountancy qualifications and there is additional department-specific training. Working in Finance at GM&T channels an individual’s knowledge and skills towards shaping the systems and processes of GM&T’s future.

Jobs in Finance
GM&T is rapidly growing its capability and developing innovative products across multiple commodities within new markets. The Finance team plays a key part in supporting this drive for growth, and there are numerous opportunities for finance professionals in GM&T.
The Finance rotation will offer the chance to work across a number of our key teams and therefore gain a broad insight into the department. This will challenge an individual to understand not just the processes and responsibilities of each team but also the synergies with the rest of Finance and the Business. The rotation will provide exposure to the Finance Trading Capability, Financial Reporting and Accounting, Financial Planning and Analysis, Treasury and Settlements teams.
Main responsibilities of the Finance Trading Capability Team
New product planning and co-ordination from a Finance department perspective;
Leading the needs of Finance on all new company tactical solutions and systems.
Prioritisation of Finance department development requests and representation at IT planning meetings;
Working across the department to improve processes and controls – this includes developing controlled, automated Excel / Access based solutions where current system functionality is insufficient, and ensuring the tools available are fully exploited.
Main responsibilities of the Financial Reporting and Accounting Team
Production of statutory and group accounts on a monthly basis, ensuring the results meet all International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) disclosure requirements.
As GM&T grows and enters into complex transactions, the team takes a proactive approach in participation in the review of contracts and transactions and provides technical IFRS analysis prior to finalisation.
Responsible for reconciling the gross margin results to the trading system and external 3rd Party confirmations, ensuring accuracy and completeness of accounting records.
The team provides monthly and quarterly input into the group consolidated accounts accordance with IFRS standards. The team actively participates in the Internal Audit process by continually responding to audit queries and providing ad hoc analysis.
Manage the Accounts Payable function and ensuring that overhead invoices are available for payment on time and that supplier queries are dealt with efficiently.
Main responsibilities of the Financial Planning and Analysis Team
Providing information, analysis and advice to support decision-making at a Geography, Business unit and Support function level at GM&T;
Providing financial analysis and input into the production of GM&T’s mid-term strategic and operational plans, which are submitted to the Board of Directors on a bi-annual basis.
Intra-year reforecasts in order to determine if the business is performing in line with expectation and to support tactical decision making if and when required;
Performing financial modelling and valuation within the group, in order to support rapid change through acquisitions and new products, while helping to monitor the impact on the group’s financial position and outlook.
Management reporting and providing clear, concise and value-added analysis that aids in helping the business to clearly understand its Financial v Economic P&L, trading desk analysis, cost control, activity based costing for indirect and direct cost allocation and KPI analysis to support performance management within the business.
Main responsibilities of the Treasury Team
Maintaining and managing GM&T Group’s financial liquidity and performing short-, medium- and long-term liquidity planning (on the Group, BU and entity basis).
Debt strategy and securing external funding, intra- and intercompany funding & cash management services (bank accounts, escrows, etc.).
Projects (estimating cash flow implications and financing cost).
Foreign exchange and interest rate planning and management.
Building and maintaining relationships with Banks.
Main responsibilities of the Settlements Team
Responsible for ensuring correct controls and validations are in place for post deal entry validations and reporting upon the effectiveness of these
Ensure that the billions of pounds of energy bought and sold is accurately confirmed, validated, invoice and settled as per the terms and conditions of the contract in place. Investigating, understanding and resolving where discrepancies are highlighted.
Multi currency activity across a wide range of products from gas, power to carbon, FX, Oil and LNG, demanding a wide range of in depth energy market knowledge.
Interfacing extensively with a wide network of departments from FO traders, IT, Trading Capability, Risk, Finance and IT, as well as supporting our Singapore and Houston offices.
Developing new processes as new products come on line.

GM&T Ltd is a marketing and trading subsidiary of Gazprom Group based in Kingston-Upon-Thames. We are currently looking to recruit 6 graduates to join our Front Office function where you will be exposed to up to 5 business units including the Operations team, the Trading Analysis and Strategy team, the Carbon team, the Origination team, the Trading Capability team and with the Trading teams directly.
During your time in the Operations team, you will provide vital support to the Trading teams for Gas, Power and Carbon. Working with the Trading Analysis and Strategy team will increase your knowledge and experience of the Front Office activities by giving you the opportunity to support the Trading & Portfolio Team (and wider GM&T) by providing clear, accurate and timely analysis to inform decision making. Your contribution to the Trading desk will be through checking deal entries to minimise errors and so reducing errors to the Settlements Team.

Main Responsibilities in the Operations Team
Provide an added value link with Back Office
Responding to queries regarding invoice reconciliation
Continuous improvement of processes and procedures
Support the Front Office in ensuring that all GM&T positions are balanced and reconciled in accordance with Trading Manager’s instructions
Ensure that trading activity carried out on behalf of trading team is accurate
Support the Operations Manager in ensuring that Operations’ activities are executed in a timely and accurate manner:
Support the Power and Gas Trading teams in the successful nominations of daily positions to the grids and networks
Ensure accuracy of nominations for GM&T positions
Main Responsibilities in the Trading Analysis and Strategy team
Support front-office decision makers by providing accurate and timely analysis of market drivers
Extract, collate, check and analyse market data from relevant information sources; use this to build market models and trading decision models
Monitor current news feeds, company, industry and competitors’ websites, passing market sensitive information onto Traders
Attend industry conferences, reporting back to the Trading team
Produce regular (routine) reports on various commodity markets (especially gas and power)
Deliver ad-hoc analysis to inform trading decisions
Participate in the design and conceptualisation of trading analysis tools, writing specifications for and testing applications built by in-house IT Developers
Provide administrative support to the Trading team
Main Responsibilities with the Carbon Team
Monitor and collect information, from UN and other sources
Provide administrative support to Carbon team, support in co-ordination and recording of team meetings, assist in following-up and closing issues.
Develop and maintain specific databases related to different project processes and market trends, DOE performance, timelines, request for reviews, etc. This would be used for interaction with SP and Risk and specific decision making
Assist in developing and maintaining our own databases
Provide administrative support to Carbon team, support in coordination and recording of team meetings. Assist in following up and closing issues
Provided administrative support in administration activities of PM team systems [PM tool, DOE pipeline, planning, etc]
Provide entry level support for project quality control [consistency checks, work book auditing] and initial screening [review against methodologies, etc]
Provide assistance in development of weekly-monthly reports
Main Responsibilities with the Origination Team
Identify and establish new sales channels in-line with the sales and marketing strategy (in UK and subsequently in continental Europe)
Focus on the development of gas/power activity in new/different markets
Responsible for originating structured deals, negotiate and conclude sales contracts with customers (both wholesale and end users, or final customer delivery point)
Establish new and maintain existing relationships with GM&T customers
Manage growth in sales volumes and growth in the GM&T customer base (in UK and subsequently in continental Europe)
Provide input to legal review of sales contract terms and conditions
Build strategic relationships with core internal business partners e.g. Trading team, optimisation, analytics, Risk, I.T. etc
Production of management reports and presentations
Ensure compliance with risk management governance policies and procedures
Main Responsibilities with the Trading Capability Team
Facilitate the development of a strong portfolio of counterparty trading documents, in support of GM&T’s expansion
Support & improve implementation of Business Processes
Research and analysis of prospective market areas for GM&T’s trading expansion

Co-ordinate ad hoc Front Office trading capability requirement as required
Main Responsibilities with the Trading Teams
Be a point of contact for all Traders during the day with a key responsibility to support the deal entry process for 11 multi commodity (gas, power, foreign exchange & oil) traders checking traders individual trade blotters against what has been entered into the in house trading database and minimising any potential errors. Work with individual traders to address any amendments as required.
Work directly with the Trading Managers to identify and implement initiatives to support daily trading activity and run ad hoc analysis as requested in order to support the commercial management of the desks. Liaise with all areas of the business, including overseas subsidiaries in Singapore and Houston, to address trade queries and provide information as required

Candidate Specification:
Qualifications:
Degree level education in finance, business, engineering, science or a related numerate discipline. Masters preferred.
Skills:
Excellent analytical skills and a good attention to detail
A good level of numeracy and computer skills, ideally with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
